This child development center in Mozambique serves an area in which water is precious. Around 39 percent of the population has no access to clean water, and less than 1 percent has access to latrines. There are many children who are orphaned, and when the center first opened, the local school was closed. The center, which is open three days a week, welcomes these children, providing holistic care that includes nutritious meals to enhance their physical well-being, and spiritual nurturing through Bible studies. Social skills and relationship-building are enhanced through games and sports, which also creates a safe and supportive space for children to be children again. Educational success is encouraged through help with homework, something possible only because community leaders were so encouraged by the center's opening that he petitioned the local government to reopen the school. Community leaders are now involved in the center, and advocating for children in the larger community.
